It's a good thing though that this guy's character was so out in the open though(He called his boss "woman"?!!!) Had he hidden his actual tendencies behind a veil of elaborate outward charm as many of these people do, the conviction would probably have failed. Mandy did not have any defence wounds. It was the fact his own brother and wife couldn't stand his ways that probably tipped the scales for the jury

In fact, it should have been a clue to law enforcement from the start that Mandy did not have defence wounds. That means she was compliant during the sexual assault because she thought that would be the worst of it and he would let her go. It's only when she realizes that will not happen that she makes her frantic escape attempt. That makes it clear she knew her attacker and therefore he had to be a community insider. They wasted time looking hard at drifters and such who wouldn't even have access to a car even though they guessed the perp had to have a car or he couldn't have apprehended Mandy

No doubt but the flipside is the misguided idea that only someone who "didn't fit in" to the community could be the killer. They could have honed in on Bass much earlier. Also those women at the waterpark could have talked to law enforcement in private long ago without making public accusations. Just an informal off the record conversation or even an anonymous letter. In the end, if it weren't for Tim being a guy even his family didn't like(and many people like this are far more personable, in fact uncommonly personable to compensate) his defence would have worked. In spite of everything, the body had been in the water a couple of days, which makes precise forensic analysis difficult, and Mandy didn't have any clear defence wounds. Her wounds were primarily in running away from her captor. It would have been touch and go with the jury and really Bass's general unlikeability seems to have tipped the scales against him
