Or that the problem was from this particular station being vandalised by anti-EV groups. None of the other 6 chargers has this problem. Which is also why most people there were ride share and didn’t realise if they used teslas onboard navigation instead of phone navigation, it would have taken them to an operational charger with lower wait times.

Is it as funny as the vast majority of tow truck call-outs have been for ICE vehicles that can’t start because it’s too cold for the fuel to burn properly?
1
You do realise that EV’s perform better in the cold than ICE. The model 3 is a BMW direct competitor but costs less than the average car price. Regarding the problem in chicargo. It wasn’t the cars. It was the charging station. It was vandalised. That’s why despite there being 6 other Tesla super chargers in chicargo and 24 other branded supercharger in chicargo there is only footage of this very specific charging station. And almost every person who went there to charge are ride share, who don’t know how to use the navigation and Tesla communities the wait times, and status of the chargers to the cars, and would have directed them to one of the other 6 nearby.

That’s why most of the tow truck call outs have been for ICE cars that can’t start because of the cold.

@ChrisTopherBunnell best burn I’ve seen in a while.
1
Most people don’t have to imagine. Since the vast majority of tow truck call outs during this cold snap have been for ICE cars that can’t start because the engines are too cold to burn the fuel properly or other related cold weather issues.
1
How is that worst than the CEO of Toyota?
1
It wasn’t the cars that were the problem here. It was that the station was vandalised by anti-EV groups. The other 6 supercharger stations nearby were working fine. Hence why every news station showed footage all of the exact same charging station. Or that data shows there was a record number of gas cars needing towing or trucks not starting with EV tows making up the vast vast minority of tows during the cold snap. But let’s not start letting facts get in the way of feelings.

Hybrid batteries notoriously don’t last long due to lack of a battery management system and how small they are. Current generation EV batteries last about twice as long as a standard combustion engine. And the price is going down. In 2018 the price was $20k for replacement. As of 2023, it’s $12k average. Economy of scale is a wonderful thing isn’t it?
1
@grazz7865 oh good. You’ve actively ignored everything I’ve said. How delightful. Notice I said average car. If your partners car survived a long time. Good for them. But that’s not the majority of peoples experience. On average current generation EV batteries will outlive combustion engines. And my point about it now being $12k is that the price is coming down. And will continue to come down as adoption increases. That’s how things work. It’s called economy of scale. So by the time the car needs a new battery, well and truely past where a standard combustion engine will live to, it will cost as much or less than a combustion engine to replace. But keep drinking that cool aid bud.
1
@grazz7865 oh, btw, it depends on which battery is being replaced in what car. Some car companies don’t have the economy of scale. But I find it hard to believe the cost of the battery is more than the cost of the car itself. Otherwise I genuinely worry if they’re even making a profit on the cars. Pro tip. If it’s too wild to believe, it’s probably fake.

It was actually chargers vandals in this instance. Typically modern EV’s are more reliable in the cold than ICE.
1
If only that were true
1
Pretty good since I charge at home and the vast majority of tow truck call outs have been for ICE cars that won’t start because of the cold.
1
That’s why the vast majority of tow truck call outs have been for ICE cars that won’t start because of the cold. Gotcha.
1
They’re actually really not. This specific case was caused by vandals destroying the chargers at this specific location. That’s why the article only mentions teslas and only footage of this specific station. Not any of the other 6 nearby. But I’m guess you never took the 3 seconds to wonder why that is and gulped this headline down like a 🐑

@TheFarmerfitz I don’t understand. Both those things have nothing to do with the cars themselves. Internationally most people don’t have either of those: and yet the most popular new car sold globally in 2023 was the Tesla Model Y
1
@TheFarmerfitz except no they don’t stop in cold weather. Older models with resistance heaters did suffer. Never stopped, just ranger was reduced as the heater to keep the battery warm drawer a lot of power. These days (2020 onwards). They all have heat pumps which lose less than 1-2% in extreme cold. Infact the model Y launch even was held as a 2 week drive event in the northern most town in Alaska! so clearly, no. You’re wrong.
1
@TheFarmerfitz infact, they’re the most polar type of car in Norway which regularly sees colder temperatures than most of the mainland US. And they don’t have any problems. Why do you suspect that is?
1
@TheFarmerfitz the battery could be similar but the manufacturing for that brand and the availability of trained repairers might be substantially less depending on the brand. And where is “here” exactly? There is a lot more in an EV than the battery. Most of which is expensive. And like I said. The average battery replacement cost was $12k in 2023. Anecdotes don’t defeat that statement. Also looking at that particular case with the ionic further it appears that the majority of that markup was from the dealer capitalising on the repairs. Not a problem non dealer cars suffer. Such as Tesla.
1
@TheFarmerfitz well then in Canada the model 3 costs $35k
1
@TheFarmerfitz interesting. Because I checked the Tesla Canada website and it said the model 3 was starting at around $35k. And most chargers a fine being outside. Infact when I go to the snow field in my Tesla to go snowboarding each season. Every charger up there is external. Never once had a problem. Even when it would dump 20cm overnight.
1
@TheFarmerfitz for farm work. I agree. Not suitable. For daily commuting or as a family car. Then it is suitable. But they are far more than just an “city car.” Their limitations only start showing, in my opinion. If you can’t charge it at home (you have to park on the street). Or if you need to tow trailer regularly (like a trades man vehicle towing tools and materials from construction site to construction site).
1
Interesting because according to official sources the vast majority of tow truck call out have been due to ICE cars with frozen engines not starting because of the cold weather. 😂 this article is click bait
