  1. I'm Italian, living in a 19th-century independent (detached) masonry house surrounded by a garden, in a city that's one of the world's most famous tourist attractions. I think American houses are often so paper-thin and poorly build, I'm not sure I'd want to own one... You basically buy the lot they are on, more than the houses themselves, that are not built to last much. Different choices, different traditions... To each his own.

  2. I'm totally and happily debt-free, by the way. No mortgage, no student loan (they actually gave ME money to get my degree in Economics, not the other way around).
