  3. It's a complex issue. Most Taiwanese wants independence but if they officially declare it, then that's war with China and nobody wants war. Even if Taiwan somehow were to fend off China's invasion, it would destroy any shred of relationship between China and Taiwan (many Taiwanese do in fact still have relatives, friends and business interests in China). Most Taiwanese are still waiting and hoping for the day that China liberalizes and democratizes (but that is looking more and more unlikely). That's why many opt for the status quo, however if China leaves Taiwan no choice then most Taiwanese would be willing to support independence. The best Taiwan can do right now is to play it defensively (don't cause any trouble overtly) and prepare Taiwan as best as it can for an invasion from China. I'm actually glad many democratic and allied nations are now overtly supporting Taiwan on the world stage.
