China is facing a demographic collapse because of urbanization. In a normal development of nations, people move from rural to cities tends to take generations. For Britain it took 7 generations, for the US it took 5 generations, for China the rapid urbanization took only 1 generation. They literally went from 95% of the population of the country living in the rural villages to 65% of the population living in cities in a span of 40-50 years. Urbanization tends to reduce population because of higher cost of living and cities are not conducive to having many kids, and this neck break speed urbanization leads to neck break speed population collapse too. So China is now in a massive quandary -- you need a sustainable population in order to sustain economic growth. You need an ideal rate of 2.1 to be able to sustain a population. The US had a population replacement rate of 1.9 (or 2.1 factoring in immigration), Japan had about 1.3, China had a population replacement rate of 1.15 due to the one child policy. Even as the policy was lifted in 2015, it was already too late, China's population had peaked in 2005 not 2030 as the analysts had predicted. It was a massive miscalculation due to the opaque census data reporting in the Chinese system. This is why China is so screwed up right now, there's literally nothing their government could do -- they estimated by 2100 China's population could decrease from the current 1.2 billion to less than 600 million (50% population collapse in just 80 years is insane by any standard). Now the regime is thinking of imposing extreme policies like completely banning abortion and mandatory children (having 2 - 3 kids to be promoted in party or government jobs).
