@taoliu3949 Yep. That’s always the narrative being promoted by the CCP that the opium war was the cause of China’s decline when in fact it is due to the mismanagement of the Qing dynasty. This is caused by decades of internal weaknesses and corruption. By the end of the Qing dynasty 9 out of 10 Qing public officials were corrupt. That is the real reason for the fall of Qing. And one major weakness of the Chinese is the inability to see their own weaknesses and they find it easier to blame the westerners for it. I guess even now they still have this weakness and is blaming the west as usual.

Wolf warrior diplomacy is indeed so cartoonish you wonder if these CCP diplomats are somehow trying to destroy the credibility of their own government.

The Digital Yuan instead of allowing freedom is the exact opposite. It virtually guarantees government control of everything. If the Chinese government wants to destroy someone they can simply void their banking privileges. The person cannot survive especially if China completely phases out cash. Cash for all its limitations at least ensures some freedom free from government control. Digital Yuan is 1984 dystopian technology becoming reality.

It’s not bizarre. It’s a safety net. Many wealthy Chinese knows the Chinese housing market is extremely speculative and it could inevitably crash one day. If shit hits the fan they still have their assets in the US or Canada to save them.

@ericmanget4280 Agreed. I believe some states now have provisions to impose a tax penalty on empty property. This is state by state tho not federal.

Originally the intent was when the CCP collapses, the ROC government can then step in to take over China. Also back during the days of the original deal, Taiwan was still an authoritarian military dictatorship, the US did not calculate Taiwan turning into a vibrant liberal democracy in the 1990s. The US government engagement with China hopes that prosperity and trade would somehow liberalizes and democratizes China. And here we are in 2022, and obviously things didn't pan out the way it was planned. China has gotten wealthier, more powerful and more dangerous but it did not democratize nor liberalize in fact it has gotten even more nationalistic, militaristic and bellicose. The US government basically created its own Frankenstein's monster that it cannot easily stop. This is why the US government is in a panic because sooner or later the US China relations will turn from friendly to economic rival into bitter enemies. But there is a profound shift in US Taiwan relations starting 2017. US has become a LOT more supportive of Taiwan. But it cannot overtly support Taiwan independence in order not to trigger a war in the Taiwan strait. The Taiwanese are recognizant of this fact so many does support the status quo. Very few Taiwanese nowadays (less than 5%) wants full unification with China. It is in fact the PRC's hyper-nationalists side that keeps banging the war drums on Taiwan to deflect attention away from the collapsing economy in China.
