@dougscott188 Problem with Ecuador is that if you get a residency you can only leave for 3 months out of the year or you lose your residency. Also, if you keep money in a bank there, if you leave the country you have to pay the government a percentage of YOUR money you took out of the bank. There are several other disadvantages but mostly related to being a business owner there. It could be ideal for someone who is retired, who doesn't plan on traveling much and banks in another country.

@BillLaBrie Oh, I think they will be using it!

@draperlamarcakes It can be cool there too. However if you acclimate, you likely wouldn't have a heart attack in the future.

There are plenty of places in the USA that are affordable. I was looking online for a client who wants to relocate to Southern Missouri. I found a 3 bedroom home for $57,000 on 1/2 acre. That's about a $265.00 a month payment, less than most people's car payments. I also saw very nice apartments with all utilities paid for $400/month. So, one can live affordably.

@johng6417 Panama is a great country! A good channel here on Panama is I Go Panama. Mary and her husband run that channel, they live in Bocas. She has an online biz + is building her property in the jungle. She goes thru all the quirks she has encountered living here too. When she applied for the FNV, on her FBI background she had a fix it ticket that she got 20 years prior driving thru Colorado. Since she didn't live in the state never bothered to deal with it. Just because of this she had to go through a Buena Vista, an extra process through immigration. She was finally approved, but this shows how detailed Panama is. So, if someone had a drunk driving charge, they might not be able to get a residency for instance.

One more thing is that the lock downs were hard on the locals here. Unlike many western countries, there was no compensation during these times. When you go shopping like at a grocery store or Price Smart, make sure that you let the bagger come out with you to your car or taxi and tip them per bag. I do around $1 a bag, some of the employees there only receive these tips as wages. In Mexico I have heard that at some gas stations, people will pay to be able to work there. So, them for checking tire pressure, cleaning one's windows etc. You likely have noticed how many people work in a store, not all are receiving wages, so it keeps the system working.

key with Mexico is you have to qualify for a temporary residency. They are curtailing the border runs that have been going on for years. Its seems to be around $2500 month to prove you are self supporting. So, it's immaterial if you can live there for $1,000/month, you have to show more money.

The first 2 are high tourist areas in Mexico.

@mkeuphoria We are likely talking about different types of visas. If one has documentable income like from a pension or social security, they are not given a temporary visa. It is a permanent visa, but one can't leave the country for more than 3 months. After 5 years, one can apply for citizenship, I don't believe this has changed. However, I could be wrong. Same with Nicaragua, if one goes on a retirement visa, they need to stay in the country 6months out of the year. However, if one gets an investor visa, one has no time limit to my understanding.

@mkeuphoria Many people do enjoy living in Ecuador. Unlike Panama, there is a big division between being a citizen and being a permanent resident in Ecuador. While I'm not the kind of person who makes decisions on my ability to have firearms, it is concerning that only citizens in Ecuador can have guns or have the right to protect themself, which is not allowed to permanent residents. Seems a very unfair situation. Again, I have no intention of owning a firearm, but it does sound problematic and that one is definitely part of an underclass.

There is a gentleman on You Tube who has a Book Channel and he lives in Georgia. You might want to search for him. He's quite nice and will return any messages you send him.

Not for $1,000 month

@johng6417 That's not a $1000 a month, which is title of video.San Carlos is a beautiful area and I would say $1500-2000 month is more realistic. You've a deal for $750.00. I see videos of people renting homes on the beach for $450, but these are outliers not the average if you look at Encuentra24.

@johng6417 You know they changed the Friendly Nations program, right? They also changed the 6 months to 3 months, then there was outcry and turned it back to 6 months for Americans and Canadians but they do plan to turn it back at sometime to 3 months. Right now with the Friendly Nations, one has to put 200k in a bank or buy $200k in real estate BEFORE you can apply for it. It is only good for 2 years then if everything is the same, then it will become permanent.

@johng6417 I already have my residency. If you read my comments, I referenced the real estate option. It is risky because one had to purchase it before applying for the residency. Also, you don't have the permanent residency until after you had the temporary residency for 2 years. So, in essence it is a provisional residency. This changed in August. If you had applied for the FNV in early May, it would have cost less than $10,000 to have this residency. As Andrew in this channel cautions, its better to act sooner than later, because many types of programs are going away. The new digital nomad program one needs to show $3,000 per month plus one has to show proof of medical insurance. The total time one can be in this program is 18 months.
