@michaelknapp8961 ... Oh, i was pretty popular, i guess. "The sportsos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads" – they all adored me. They thought i was a "righteous dude.”

i dressed like spicoli before spicoli did. i never wore a shirt if i didn't have to. patched jeans, tennis shoes, no sox, no shirt, bandana and long hair. and, no, i was no surfer. just one mega-cool midwestern cat on a mission to spread joy and love everywhere i went! btw, at 62, i still do that. you never outgrow being cool if you were actually cool in the first place. unfortunately, most people don't outgrow being an asshole either.
that wonderful pause at 5:22 was the result of editing. according to the director, Amy Heckerling, there was no actual pause between the end of mr. hand's question and spicoli's response.
penn responded immediately. but during editing they decided to mute hand's dialogue, while keeping it entirely on ray walston's close up. so, when penn appears to be taking a few seconds to think about how to respond, he's actually just waiting for walston to deliver his line. aahhh, the magic of editing. it helped make sean penn a STAR!

@michaelknapp8961 ... yep, i think you just described every high school on the planet. jocks rule. but i think my school didn't quite fit that mold. at least with me, most everyone, all the so-called "cliques," were kinda cool.
i hung out with stoners, jocks, cheerleaders, nerds and brains. most everyone i knew got stoned. and, particularly, the so-called popular chicks, were real cool. to me anyway. i guess i just kinda got along with everybody. never liked the "motorheads" much though. but even most of them were pretty cool, AWAY from their cars.
