the whole idea behind our justice system is to exact justice under the law. that includes allowing the accused the right to defend themselves. this right to a defense rarely applies to the lower classes. but aside from that, that right isn't a license to lie, abuse the courts or delay or deny justice. the principle doesn't hold up if the accused can just lie his way out of conviction. his defense must be based upon the truth or the system won't work. this is the responsibility of the defense attorney. this is the role that he plays. if he fails to meet his legal and ethical obligation then the system fails. that's why all lawyers take oaths to defend and upohold the constitution just like all cops do. finding the truth and equal application of the law are two requirements of any "legal" legal system.
