the nazis ruled through terror. the cruelty of the gestapo and the SS was an open secret. people would be hauled away in the middle of the night with no charges and no trial never to be seen again. many types of people, not just jews, were publiclly brutalized. observers had three choices: join in the brutality, keep silent about it or become among the brutalized. the system was so corrupt suspicion and mistrust was everywhere. even nazis would falsely accuse other nazis of disloyality as a means to rise within the nazi ranks. everyone lived in fear that they'd be next to be hauled away. it was the same in fascist italy, franco's spain and the soviet union. and this is what way to many idiots want to rule us all even today.
