I agree, there's a BIG difference between patriotism and nationalism. a patriot criticizes their country in the hopes of making it better. a nationalist considers criticism as treason.

but there is that saying - those who don't learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. as long as people continue to deny the causes of past problems how are we ever going to recognize the current causes of out problems? one of the causes of our problems is PRECISELY what you wrote. our elitist leadership keeps us divided by making us see ONLY our differences and NEVER our commonalities. humanity is, in fact, much more alike than different.

+Mia... remember, fascism and populism have NOTHING to do with one another. i'm glad you edited that out of your comment. thanks. in fact fascism is anti-populism. that's why the elite embrace fascism so readily. they fear REAL populism. it threatens their power, authority and domination over us ALL! the elite have spent much money discrediting, misrepresenting and fighting populism over the centuries. hell, democracy itself is a form of populism. that's why the elite implemented a republic and the electoral college into the U.S. they didn't want the "people" making the decisions in this country. they fear voters might actually start voting in their own best interests and stop listening to the lies the elite tell them which ONLY serve the elite by keeping us divided so populism NEVER takes hold.

one problem. to compare trump followers with "populism" is completely inaccurate. and to say they wish to dismantle the establishment is also incorrect. populism has to with being beneficial to the people. trump wasn't offering that and his followers knew that. trump was offering fascism NOT populism. and his followers new that. trump was offering a stronger elite, a more authoritarian establishment. that's what ALL fascists want. populism is actually linked to labor, socialist and progressive movements; freedoms and protections FROM the elite. more equality and less favoritism towards the wealthy. b. sanders was a good example of a TRUE populist movement. and he'd be president right now if the elite weren't so afraid of him as to rig the democratic primary against him. hell, the reality is trump lost that election to Clinton who lost her primary to sanders. if the elite were REALLY afraid of trump - as they are with ALL real populist movements - they would've rigged the republican primary against him like they did against sanders. nope, trump wasn't populist in the slightest. he was an elitist and that's why he lost the election but the elite placed him in the white house anyway!

you're speaking like a true fascist. the people can't be trusted to rule themselves. they need an iron fisted elite to dominate and enslave them for their own good. you're also ignoring a thing called the bill of rights. concepts like human rights, which are represented in those first 10 amendments of the constitution, an essential part of the rule of democracy that guarantees the majority can't oppress the minority. the problem occurs when a fascist minority illegally seizes power and corrupts the govt which is supposed to represent us all equally! which is precisely what's happening, particularly, since Reagan. so don't trash democracy when fascists like you screw it up!

+ihrohni… i'm afraid here in the U. S. there's a huge misuse of the word "fascism." but sadly, many on the left are abandoning their leftist traditions and becoming more fascist all the time. yep, fascism is a far right ideology and many claiming to be on the left are adopting fascist principles and strategies. I say; screw the fascists on the right and left!
