I get the point here but you're assuming the U.S. is democratic to begin with - which it isn't. our political candidates are picked and funded by the elite from 2 elitist political parties, promoted by the elitist mainstream media and the so-called president is chosen by the elite through the electoral college. once elected the politicians rarely do what they were elected to do and do whatever the elite demand that they do. the trouble with trump is that its illegal for him to be pretending to be president based upon CONFLICT OF INTEREST alone. so all this "democratic backsliding" is just for show. none of the elite have any desire for democracy or any respect for democratic institutions anyway. but your point is STILL valid!
