you know i'd imagine it'd be hard to "liquidate" gold bars. you'd probably have to prove ownership. the thieves would have to sell them to a foreign govt at probably a 10th of their market value. still a nice haul but a hell of a lot of hassle. it would take years if not decades. and where would you keep the gold in the meantime? under your mattress? the only real benefit the thieves could claim is bragging rights. and bragging about it would land you in prison. so the whole idea of stealing a stash of gold bars seems rather pointless.
