  1. there's an old saying on the "left" - "you can't legislate morality." this is the argument they use to support abortion, defend gay rights and denounce Prohibition laws. but, morality being a religiously based word, morality differs from religion to religion to culture to culture. morality aside, remove cultural traditions and religious prejudice from the argument - YOU CAN legislate ethics. ethics are universal. they aren't determined by when or where you live. ALL LAWS, from 1000s of years ago, were meant to codify ethics and punish unethical behavior. theft, bribery, fraud, corruption and murder have all been universally denounced by every culture known to history. even nazi germany had laws based upon ethics. they just weren't enforced by the gangsters who thrived on the corruption so prevalent among the nazis. the whole idea behind the law AND GOVT is to legislate ethics. so everyone is on equal footing and to keep the unethical out of power. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!
