both the left and right insist that we ALL deny history and reality so particular groups of people "don't feel bad." its called "identity politics" and its tearing the country apart. i'd like to clatify the reconstruction period in the south. the ex-slaves that were "elected" to congress didn't represent the majority, they were highly uneducated, often drunk on the job and corrupt. they WEREN'T prepared to govern or legislate. the northern politicians needed to educate and assimilate these ex-slaves into "free," american society BEFORE allowing them into state govts. there were few "frederick douglass'" among the freed slaves. the north needed to continue its occupation and control of the south until the freed slaves could be properly educated and "assimilated." if they had done so the u. s. may have had a very different history.

whites couldn't pass this test either. its a masterpiece in vagueness, complication and absurdity. were blacks the only ones required to take the test?

whites couldn't pass this test either. its a masterpiece in vagueness, complication and absurdity. were blacks the only ones required to take the test? if not, then the test was unfair for everyone. if so, then the test was intentionally racist and divisive. either way... the test sucked big time!
