The French invented the first practical smokeless powder rifle (Lebel), hydro-pneumatic cannon (model 75), "modern" light tanks (FT 17), etc. and unfortunately other countries would take these ideas further and better and leave France behind.

@hugoquelquechosecommeca3560 There is nothing in the Leclerc's combat history to suggest that it is better than the Abrams. Dassault makes some pretty good planes, though.

@hugoquelquechosecommeca3560 French tanks were only the best during the start of the war. Once France halted development their tanks were obsolete. And one could make an argument for the Churchill and M4 as being equal or superior to the T34.

@hugoquelquechosecommeca3560 I like French guns. I like French tanks. But they just always aren't on top, like you claim.

@hugoquelquechosecommeca3560 Lmao, I never said anything about America. I was only talking about their tanks.

@hugoquelquechosecommeca3560 The B1 Bis, with the Somua S35, was the best tank at the beginning of the war but later they did not have enough firepower or armor to compete. The B1 Bis has 2.6-3 inches of armor but the Churchill and Tiger have 4.8-6 inches of armor.

@UC5IiCGSCEUTmQaM_Y0U5Fng Because of poor tactics, surprise and poor logistics. The Somua S-35 was far superior to the Panzer I and II and more than a match for the Panzer III. The Char B1 bis was more heavily armed and armored than anything the Germans had until the Panther 2 years later. However, both French tanks were deployed piecemeal and easily overwhelmed by air support and superior numbers.
