  1. What do you mean? If you are saying that the French make bad designs, keep in mind that they invented the Hotchkiss, pretty much the best machine gun of World War 1.

  2. hoodoo2001 For mobile weapons there was also the Hotchkiss Mk1, Madsen, and Vilar Perosa, all of which were significantly better designs.

  3. Wez Marauder I have since read up on the war and I apologize for any misinformation. The US were woefully unprepared and had multiple logistical problems attaining said equipment. I thank you for correcting me, although it would've been nice if you did it in a respectful manner.

  4. Actually, it's still a pretty bad weapon. The open magazine is a bad idea, the long recoil system is a bad idea. Reliable or not, it's still the worst machine gun of all time. Think about it. It holds 20 bullets, which for a machine gun is pretty terrible, and fires at 250 rounds per minute. I can fire a pistol faster than that. Speed shooters can fire semi auto weapons at 400 rounds per minute. 250 rounds per minute, frankly, is abysmal. The next worst machine gun could fire twice that speed. The gun was uncomfortable, it was inaccurate due to the awkward recoil, the front grip was in a strange place, the bipod was too long.....everything about the design of this gun was poorly thought out. And it doesn't end there. Even if it were the most reliable gun in the world it would still be a horrible gun. And the thing is, it's not. Regardless of nationality, all Chauchats were terrible quality. The quality was so rough that the parts were hardly interchangeable. That, and the dirt-welcoming magazine, makes it a none too reliable gun. The 30 odd 6 made it far worse, but stop pretending that it was even a halfway decent gun to begin with. It wasn't.

  5. hoodoo2001 Yes, that's it's only redeeming quality. It's like the Liberator of machine guns though, there come a point where there is too much quantity are far too little quality.

  6. It's horrible because there were alternatives so much better. The Madsen, BAR, and Lewis were also available to the US, and they were reliable guns that actually could shoot fast. Why the US chose the Chauchat is beyond me.
