dig it out man! put it to work. There are some great addons for c64 these days. check out the 1541 Ultimate and other carts.

They have varta batteries in them that leak and usually corrode/eat the motherboard traces.. if you care for it,i would pull it out and check it,it's a usually blue or red barrel shaped battery. remove it,it will work fine without it.

Not quite true, but what you are talking about is the Varta clock battery on the A500 ram expansion in the belly slot. The battery leaks,corrodes traces and eats them. it usually doesn't harm the a500 and the ram expansion is possibly repairable worst case replaceable. This problem plagued the a2000,3000,4000 also that had clock batteries soldered on board and could leak and cause serious damage. I have repaired a lot of these Amiga's over the last 20 years.

@Hirpina81 oops.. some 500+ did have a onboard battery that leaked on the motherboard,but i've repaired them in almost every case, its not too bad.

the A501 ram expansions on the A500 had a clock battery,and the A500+ has a clock battery on its motherboard.. These batteries leak and eat the traces on the board causing them to sometimes quit working. best to remove the battieries before they leak and replace with a diode and cr2032 lithium coin cell. Boards are usually repairable if caught in time. If the board is unrepairable,people make brand new motherboard i can build yourself.

@aleksazunjic9672 Maybe where you were, but we had up to 2MB ram expansion hacks,reu's from commodore went to 512K. CMD made hard drives and high density floppy drives. Not to mention the commodore 1571, and 3.5" 1581 drive that held 3000 blocks! there was tons of support here in the USA.. Just about everyone here had floppy drives, cassette was rare on a c64 in the states.

@VulpisFoxfire The cartridge that allowed 56K modems was Swiftlink. CMD made a cart to do the same called Turbo-232. There was also a supercpu,a compatible 28Mhz 85816 cpu that plugged into the cartridge port

@aleksazunjic9672 The amiga could read and write 1581 disks with c1581.lha off aminet. There was also a cable you could built to use a 1541 directly on amiga parallel port.

Jiffydos even made a huge difference ,most just had a fastload cart of some sort i guess.

the c64 had a floppy drive available and also later a hard drive by aftermarket companies,pretty expensive however.

There were several hard disks for c64.. Lt Kernel was one and the CMD HD,they came in sizes up to 100MB or so. CMD made great stuff for c64 like RAMLINK(up to 16MB ram) could be treated like a ram drive. printer interfaces to use laser printers.. CMD also made the SuperCPU,it sped the 1mhz c64 up to 28mhz! These days there are addons you wouldn't believe :)

Not exactly,the C64 drive was slow because of a error. Commodore had people who went thru the commodore 64 PCB layouts and cost reduced them,one trace on the board was mistakenly deleted because they thought it was redundant,this was for BURST mode on the drive and speed. Well,when you have 100,000 pcb's made with this error you don't just toss them out. Commodore made modifications to the disk drive roms to slow it way down to make it reliable because of this. What you may not of know is there was software fast loaders as well as parallel cable hacks to speed the 1541 up signifigantly,as well as the 1571/1581 drives that came along around 85' and later that were much quicker.

@Roboto129 There were several ways to speed it up,must used a EPYX fastload cartridge,well worth the $30 price,they did ok. there was action replay cart with fastloader but most common early on was a jiffydos rom, u replaced the c64 kernal rom with. it was excellent. As for hard drive interfaces,early on there was a hack to adopt some ISA pc harddrive controller card to c64 to do a homemade HD hack(used MFM or RLL hd i think). As for parallel cables, Datel made it originally for copying,but soon it was figured out how to use it for parallel loading,this cable was soldered to a 6522 chip in the 1541 and hooked to the cart port(or was it the user port)?. A dozen companies also made different floppy drives too. like SFD.. You could also use iEEE-488 drives with a interface for c64. the sky was the limit of stuff available and if you were inventive or had some money you could do anything. I still have the X-10 home control interface for c64 and modules for lights,appliances,etc. later as geos came out,there was a parallel printer cable called Geocable you could make or buy that allowed printing to my hp 5L laser printer.

Don't throw them away,they can likely be saved. its not uncommon for the shields to rust up on them,and not critical to them. a good tear down and cleaning and they will possibly work. People are always looking for spare parts,the chips are likely salvageable worst case.
