  1. Yes,he did. the drive will work without the diode,but the diode being shorted was not allowing it to spin up so had to be removed. reinstalling one wasn't important since he was just recovering data to a new drive likely.

  2. the diode was shorted,keeping it from spinning up. You don't need the diode to get it working just to back the data up off the old drive hence no iron needed.
