  592. Not quite true, but what you are talking about is the Varta clock battery on the A500 ram expansion in the belly slot. The battery leaks,corrodes traces and eats them. it usually doesn't harm the a500 and the ram expansion is possibly repairable worst case replaceable. This problem plagued the a2000,3000,4000 also that had clock batteries soldered on board and could leak and cause serious damage. I have repaired a lot of these Amiga's over the last 20 years.

  594. the A501 ram expansions on the A500 had a clock battery,and the A500+ has a clock battery on its motherboard.. These batteries leak and eat the traces on the board causing them to sometimes quit working. best to remove the battieries before they leak and replace with a diode and cr2032 lithium coin cell. Boards are usually repairable if caught in time. If the board is unrepairable,people make brand new motherboard i can build yourself.

Personally i don't have a problem with fossil fuels,they are completely responsible for thousands of things we use in our lives every day.and we already have infrastructure in placed now for over 100 years to use it. Windmills are mostly made in plants run by fossil fuels,the steel,aluminum,copper,etc is likely refined from coal,nuclear and hydro. welded,machined and motors wound in a typical plant-the giant fiberglass blades have a finite life and end up as landfill waste.Huge concrete bases poured with lots of steel reinforcement.. Nuclear is no where near clean,we have piles of radioactive spent wasted buried in mountains etc. Hydro is the cleanest even if you ignore the environmental impact on fish and massive use of concrete(energy intensive in itself) and other things like damming streams etc. cause. There was a time in the past this was not always so prevalent. Lets take early Henry Ford for example,he paid high wages to workers in depression times and his thinking was if his workers could afford his cars they would buy them and also become customers. For the most part this worked but as we see later this was contaminated with unions,greed and corporate bean counters. There was a time not so long ago where workers had fair wages,pensions,and reasonable medical care via their jobs. Enter the bean counters,lawyers,unions etc who priced all this out of the common mans reach and made American workers un-competative . Add to this outsourcing jobs to Mexico and overseas to take advantage of sweatshop style labor thanks to our worthless politicians. Companies don't have to operate this way and Louis is a good example of this. Commodore had people who went thru the commodore 64 PCB layouts and cost reduced them,one trace on the board was mistakenly deleted because they thought it was redundant,this was for BURST mode on the drive and speed. Well,when you have 100,000 pcb's made with this error you don't just toss them out. Commodore made modifications to the disk drive roms to slow it way down to make it reliable because of this. What you may not of know is there was software fast loaders as well as parallel cable hacks to speed the 1541 up signifigantly,as well as the 1571/1581 drives that came along around 85' and later that were much quicker.

As for parallel cables, Datel made it originally for copying,but soon it was figured out how to use it for parallel loading,this cable was soldered to a 6522 chip in the 1541 and hooked to the cart port(or was it the user port)?. A dozen companies also made different floppy drives too. like SFD.. You could also use iEEE-488 drives with a interface for c64. the sky was the limit of stuff available and if you were inventive or had some money you could do anything. I still have the X-10 home control interface for c64 and modules for lights,appliances,etc. later as geos came out,there was a parallel printer cable called Geocable you could make or buy that allowed printing to my hp 5L laser printer.

Olds engines were fairly reliable but saw many a blown head gasket,cracked heads(repairable), valve train issues with the aluminum rocker stands breaking,and not to mention the olds 403 was a total dud with its open main webs that often cracked rendering the block junk. Pontiac had its share of troubles but were mostly reliable. The oiling problem wasnt much of a problem. the 4100 was a steaming pile of garbage-bad design,but could be fixed and ran well. even the buick 3.8's early on had connecting rod/rod journal problems and went thru many changes, We had a rash of 3.8's breaking camshafts... GM had such a demand for buick 3.8l they let unseasoned green blocks out to customers and as the blocks settled and moved they broke the camshafts.. the fix at the time was install oversize(ID) cam bearings and align bore the blocks.
