  6. @Steven homan briefly, in the 1930s, Aussie farmers asked the military to help control the 20,000 (or so) Emu that were destroying crops. They sent soldiers with Lewis guns, who singularly failed on the first two attempts, which caused much embarrassment. By the third they killed about 1,000 emu. The Emu wars have become a popular meme due to the absurdity, and obscurity of the situation.
