@theskycavedin once again, Kievan Rus is forced meme, no one living inside of ti called it that, they called themselves Russians just as they do now.
Moscow itself is an ancient settlement that predates invention of the wheel (people got there by the river), though, it's mostly irrelevant, what is relevant is that the same culture with the same people lived in Rus and Russia.
Southern Russia, if you want to talk that particular Ukraine (there were others, as Ukraine literally means borderland in Russian, like Grey Ukraine in Ural mountains and yellow Ukraine nearby China) was constantly at the risk of attacks from Ottoman Empire and their slaver puppets - Crimean Tatars, till the threat was eventually was eradicated by Russia. Still, the rapes, slavery (practiced by both sides, it was not uncommon for Ukrainian cossaks to get himself a bride out of military raid) made southern Russians into more of a mixed race than central and eastern slavs, so you can indeed point out some minor (after all, it's hard to find ethnically pure slav nowadays in Russia as it;s proudly multicultural country) differences between Russians and Ukrainians nowadays, but the region is still historically Russian.
