@sprintfoxy1240 Germans in HRE would never been able to do what Slavs did - i.e. take on major superpower nearby and force it to submit while adapting their religion as unifyingly theirs. There's a reason why religion wars happened in Germany and it was because they were not unified, Russia, on the other hand - was. Sure, Russia eventually became divided by the time of Mongol invasion, akin to the Austria-Hungary Empire later on, still, at it's initial start it was pretty united, contrary to not holy, nor roman, nor empire.

@sprintfoxy1240 Muscovy (more like Vladimir, but there's that) gathered the broken apart pieces of former Russia, reuniting it once more. Moscow didn't create Russia, only reinfocred it.

@sprintfoxy1240 like a puddle? YOu can call Russia as Kievan Rus and Roman Empire Byzantium all you want, no one living inside them called them anything but Russia and Roman Empire respectfully. It's a forced meme by western historians, nothing more. Russia with a capital of Novgorod conquered Kiev city and later on moved it's capital there, sure. All in all, the Russia was established for 400 years, then disintegrated under the strike of Mongol hordes (Kiev was burnt to the ground at that point) from the east and backstab from Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Teutonic order\crusaders from the west. 200 years later, Moscow that slowly and surely exploited the ruling system of their mongol overlords - rose as a centralising force to establish united country once again. The important thing to consider tis that mongols didn't care about their subjects inner laws or religion, all they cared were taxes paid in time (ancient times analogue of IRS, lol), so nothing really changed in the rulling system of Russia during all that period of time.

@sprintfoxy1240 I was talking about the naming. Rus existed and it was Russia. Princedoms or principalities were the product of backwards heridatory laws, which changed only long after Moscow became centre of power. Culture never changed at the majority of it lands, though, western Russia around Berlin ("Ber" is a sacred slav word meaning bear, like in Russian bear is "medved"="the one who lieks to eat mead", and his lair called "berloga") was culturaly changed nito Germany same as central Russia turning into catholic and changing into Poles and Eastern Russia is only thing culturally left.

@theskycavedin once again, Kievan Rus is forced meme, no one living inside of ti called it that, they called themselves Russians just as they do now. Moscow itself is an ancient settlement that predates invention of the wheel (people got there by the river), though, it's mostly irrelevant, what is relevant is that the same culture with the same people lived in Rus and Russia. Southern Russia, if you want to talk that particular Ukraine (there were others, as Ukraine literally means borderland in Russian, like Grey Ukraine in Ural mountains and yellow Ukraine nearby China) was constantly at the risk of attacks from Ottoman Empire and their slaver puppets - Crimean Tatars, till the threat was eventually was eradicated by Russia. Still, the rapes, slavery (practiced by both sides, it was not uncommon for Ukrainian cossaks to get himself a bride out of military raid) made southern Russians into more of a mixed race than central and eastern slavs, so you can indeed point out some minor (after all, it's hard to find ethnically pure slav nowadays in Russia as it;s proudly multicultural country) differences between Russians and Ukrainians nowadays, but the region is still historically Russian.
