The truth is that Russia was more than content for all freaks of nature to go into Donbass on their own since the less extremists there are in Russia - the more peaceful Russia itself is, duh. The proper recruitment for the Republics didn't last even a week - local Russian authorities prohibited them such an activity to not harm neutral status of Russia in said events.

People of Donbass found their reluctant protector in the face of Russia, deal with it. Also, Zelensky prohibited elections, if you didn't know, cause he knows too well that people would never re-elect this liar. Contrary to dictatorship of former Ukraine, Russia does have elections, if you didn;t know and people vote him in cause they trust him to do the best for the country, which he does.
