pretty much, I'm not jewish, but I'll tyr to explain. It's not specifically make them superior in their own eyes, just different. Jews believe that they are favourable children of God, but that favour brings closer his ever-watching eye (like Sauron, lol) and that they'd better behave or else. You can read Old Testament and see for yourself, but the core principle is that their god is abusive father that likes to beat his children into submission out of "love" (a concept not foreign to Christianity either, though at least we have Jesus as a mediator) and since they are his favourite children - they get beaten a lot more than others so they hold those scars and are proud that dad loves them the most cause they bear the physical proof of that.. love. I'd say it's some sort of coping mechanism about their long history of suffering and mistreatment by other nations and neigbours (which sorta became a self-fulfilling prophecy since they started to keep to themselves rejecting any forp of integration which always alienated locals and brough violence on them). Another form of their cope is to adapt for themselves "dog eat dog" philosophy and just don't have any compassion for others, which a few of them do too. Or at least something in lines of "daddy doesn't like them so neither should I".

As well as american settlers\heretics fled form the persecution in Europe and viewed themselves as victims too.
