Now, speaking about distinct uniforms - the setting follows the sentiment of ww1 era, when chivalry wasn't lost yet and the officers still were expected to lead the charge while killing such by snipers was considered a poor taste or breaking unspoken rules of engagement. So distinct uniforms serves its purpose of pointing men where is their officer, which command they should listen to, or else.

  2.  @Kojak0  well, you should also consider that might makes right in Warhammer universe and it's unusual to get appointed as officer by going through academy courses - the usual type of promotion is a field one, meaning the most hardcore, able and survivable soldiers become officers With rank they get better pay and accomodation and right to distinct themselves from the rest of their men, akin to middle ages mercenaries... Just try to understand that in grim dark future where there's only war - dying is easy part for trillions of people. Hell, if you are lucky - you can even resurrect as a local Saint. The population of Imperium is all well accustomed to death, there's even whole planets living on corpse-starch.
