  2.  @Henrik_Holst  And another important difference; in Europe YOU own the house, in the US the bank owns it. So when something bad happens, you can be fined and the bank takes back the house, car or whatever. In Europe the mortgage follows you even in your grave. Going bankrupt in the US is bad, but you can move on, in Europe consequences are far more severe.

  3.  @Henrik_Holst  It is somewhere in the middle. Apartment buildings and big offices do not take extreme damage, but building them is expensive. Light build houses and 'trailer-like' buildings are blown away but roomy for little money, as long as they last. In Europe families lived in houses that lasted generations, and each generation added something in luxury, size, appeal. In the US people move house multiple times in one generation, just when employment, career or finance change. It's a cultural difference, nothing good or bad about that, just different.
