The financial cost to the nation of importing food for twenty-five million people is massive and, should the importation of such massive quantities of food not be possible, due to some upheaval on the continent, for instance, the consequences could be extremely dire. Of course, idiots won't see this. The country is already massively overcrowded, and that causes a wide variety of ills and problems.
