I also left school at fifteen, having been utterly failed by my secondary school, a violent and cruel place. I started work well before my sixteenth birthday and started studying O levels in the evenings. In a few years I had good O level passes in English Language, Maths and Computing. I also studied Electronics and some other subjects. Later on I studied Computing Studies at University, HND level and could have gone on to get a degree had family life not placed too many demands on my time. A girlfriend many years ago who was in MENSA persuaded me to do a MENSA IQ test and I scored 156... Not bad for someone pretty much written off by my school at thirteen. Schools frequently make mistakes and fail pupils. Often the best course of action is to quit school, get out into the real world and begin learning afresh. Never stop learning, though.

Grammar Scools were one of the best drivers for social mobility ever and their demise is to be lamented. My uncle won a place at grammar school, did well and had a career as an officer in the RAF and then became a civil engineer. He did damn well for the son of a carpenter/builder who was born in a council house.
