A couple of decades ago in Derby, a small, independent jeweller's shop was ram-raided several times. The owner had the shop-front and entrance reinforced with additional concrete and steel beams incorporated into the doorframe. A local scrote stole someone's Ford Escort (not renowned as the most robust of vehicles, it has to be said) and attempted to ram-raid the shop again. The car crumpled so badly on contact with the building that he was killed, and his parents were granted legal aid to sue the shop owner for their son's manslaughter. I never found out what the result of the case was, but it's stuck in my memory ever since as an example of just how stupid the law can be.
