  1. It's even better than slavery from a corporate point of view. You hire a child as basically an indentured servant. They have no choice but to work and you don't have to provide them with enough to survive and are not responsible if anything happens to them. And if something does happen to them there's a steady stream of replacements. And if you are really good you hire them to work at the Hershey factory and only pay them in Hershey-Bucks (instead of dollars) which are only redeemable at the Hershey workers store, of course owned by Hershey. And if you don't want to pay them at all well that's fine too cause they are kids and have no rights or resources to fight back. There was a case a few months ago where McDonalds was found "employing" 12 year olds to work overnight shifts and literally didn't even pay them. Of course the fine was less than $1,000/child.

  2. The Department of Labor is a joke. Should be called the Department of Indentured Servitude at this point. And even if they wanted to do better they have no legal teeth to do so.
