This seems like a play on the name Emerson. As in Ralph Waldo Emerson who did talk about self reliance. But he was woke as hell for his day. He was an abolitionist, one of the leaders of the Transcendentalist movement (which was kinda like the US version of the Enlightenment) and rejected the views of religion at the time (he was more of a Spinoza-type in which if a god exists it is nature itself).
