The book Prosperity Paradox is quite good for explaining the success of Bretten Woods and why the financial deregulation and removal of international capital controls in the 80's have caused boom bust cycles like in the Asian financial crisis in the 90's and of course 2008 and perpetuated wealth inequality as well as creating a race to the bottom for taxes on billionaires and wages for the working class.
