Yeah it's very confusing. I read a sci-fi book that a character used they/them and I couldn't tell what was going on sometimes because you don't know if it's referring to the person or the group of people. I'm all for supporting people being themselves but idk, just come up with new terminology or something. The english language already has enough meanings for each word.

@MugsisDank That's the point of the criticism. Being both singular and plural presents a rather large grey area for confusion, especially when it's written word and not in an obvious context like in person or on the internet in a specific reply to someone. It's not a criticism of they/them in a sexual identity or political context but rather a grammatical one.
