  1. Yeah that's just an excuse they use. There's is literally a law protecting entities from liability for donated food. The usual example is with grocery stores, even though they feign ignorance of the laws existence too. The law is called the Good Samaritan and protects the donation to nonprofit organizations and those nonprofits that distribute the food. (Although to be covered it sounds like it would have to be an actual registered nonprofit or foodbank)
