  2. Everything about the Fed and Labor statistics is slimy to say the least. On top of what you mentioned when you look at how inflation is calculated compared to the 70's, now they can swap items to compare that are similar in order to make inflation/price gouging appear to be significantly less than it is. Like swapping band name goods for store brand when inflation is high to make the numbers look lower.
