I find the vitamin c from fermented liver statement a little too questionable. First, there's so little vitamin c in liver (may be in other part as well but liver is the highest) that in order to sustain an entire population they would have had to kill way too many animals. They either would not have had the time, or skill to kill that many so quickly and efficiently or the local animal populations would have collapsed. Second, it's more likely that they just preserved fruit from summer. If they had such advanced methods of fermentation then they definitely knew how to dry an apple. Dried fruit has been used as far back as 4,000 BC. (probably hard to find evidence before that)
