  1. Because a lot of choices made in america were car centric. They give you freedom to go where you want when you want after all. Such freedom, just don't get stuck again on the 9 line highway you do everyday. It seems that the solution in american governments minds for problems is always, more roads... Not, better train connections, not green zones that keep cars out of areas so they are easy walkable instead, nope.. more cars! More roads!

  2. In my country we also use a "pasmo" card system. One basic chip card that allows you to travel by different types of public transport. And nowadays even rent bikes at the trainstations that offer such service. Just think of it, you get to the station by bus, switch to a train, then at the end station rent a bike to get to your end location all on the same card.
