  1.  @crapmalls  It helps that these days a lot of parts are made by only a few brands. So no more 15 different GPU types, 10 different NIC's, The sound chips all do HDAudio so that is fine enough for most. But yeah in those early days... drivers were hell.

  2. I remember early Linux Distros. "fun" wasn't the word. Even if you got the basics running, because you know hardware issues. The time it came to use your scanner... and you find out that brands drivers were not yet yet. These days things are much better now they have a lot more standards. And basic core drivers are part of the modern Linux experience. At least now you install it, set things up, and get to work.
