I hear what you're saying about Russia neglecting cities and territories it already has in favor of taking over new territory, but those are in regions that are definitely not going anywhere because of how internal they are and all. But that also goes against the main reason Russia wants Ukraine in the first place. They say it's for "denazification" and the liberation of Russians within Ukraine, but really it comes down to the fact they want Ukraine's natural resources like natural gas, they also want the pipeline that goes through Ukraine so as not to pay any more fees to Ukraine to ship oil from Russia to Europe, and finally they want Ukraine itself for geographical reasons. It's the doorway to Europe itself. Some people think they're going for Europe next, I doubt it, they do want a strategical bastion though and they want to do it before Ukraine applies for NATO so that way it's just war vs. Ukraine whereas if Ukraine was part of NATO, this would be Russia v. NATO, not just Ukraine. And they know that's not a battle they can win. Not without using nukes or something else equally as "shooting themselves in the foot" as that.
