  1. well the fact of the matter is the Italians and to a certain extent the Chinese got them strung out on drugs. If he wasn't doing it, someone else would have. It is kind of disgraceful that he had as little shame making a fortune poisoning his own community, but he says it himself in the show. It's just a commodity, like coffee. The fact is if people want something, they're going to get it, one way or another. And some people wanted drugs. He didn't look at it from a moral standpoint, he basically took care of them anyway whether they used or not. He'd help people out all the time, especially people he saw that were smart enough to avoid the drugs. I am sure he put a lot of promising young black people through college, etc.

  2.  Datsizer  He was sent to Alcatraz on a 15 year sentence for conspiracy to sell heroin. So, no, he was selling drugs much sooner than that. He probably got put onto it through his longtime friend Lucky Lucciano who basically created the heroin trade, along with Meyer Lansky, as early as like the 20's.
