It only means something to us because our currency (USD) has been over-inflated out the ass and the sad thing is most people don't even know why that is. Like "Holy cow, $500 grand is a lot of money!" the problem is back then $50 grand probably actually took you farther than $500 grand would today but because of hyper-inflation and now everything is way too expensive compounded with the fact our money has gradually become worth less and less and less over the past century or so that the only ones with any money are people with stupid amounts of money that would've been considered impossible back in the day. So basically what's happened is money has become inflated to such an extent things not only cost more but the trajectory of work to money to actually buy these things just gets higher and higher and higher, so really the only truly rich people in the world are the ones who have over $1 billion dollars in assets preferably not under their mattress (it wouldn't fit). So by accident or by design it's 100% true, the TL;DR truth is the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Disco Sucks Yeah another thing to put it in perspective, back during WW2 the average soldier was going to be paid $50 a month. However, they were offering $100 a month to soldiers who joined the airborne division, if only because it was more dangerous, but yeah that was actually not too far behind the 30s.
