They picked a fight to take one territory, and they're going to wind up losing even more than that, not to mention tens if not hundreds of thousands or millions of their own people (by the time it's over), the trust of their own citizenry, and their economy itself. It's like that aspect of Braveheart where the Scots end up declaring war on England after they've had enough, next thing you know the Irish are showing up to help. Two birds with one stone.
