On the one hand I would like to just say that the Trump administration was a complete and total disaster and they just looked at the guy's name and his skin color and were like "YEP he's definitely a terrorist!" in spite of the fact that he did arguably more to defeat real terrorist organizations like ISIS than the US did, and it was all done just as a result of pure ignorance. But no, I think the real reasons behind it are far more sinister. They saw how revered he was and how powerful he was and they wanted to hurt Iran. I think they knew exactly what they were doing.
