Stannis isn't a troll or a bad guy, he was just an extraordinarily prideful man who felt he had been slighted his entire life by his older brother and wanted to win at all costs, so he began working in cahoots with the red witch lady to try to "cheat" his way to the top. He ends up doing things that are more and more and more depraved, by the time he finally makes that really spoilery decision about his daughter or whatever he was pretty much too far gone and his army was in a really desperate place. He sold his soul, in other words, but I do not think he's always been just an inherently evil man, but regardless he's going to whatever equivalent of Hell (if there is one) after all he's done at this point. He's the best example of a faustian character.
