  1. The Vietcong like the Taliban and Al Qaeda realized they didn't need to win the war, they just needed to not lose it. They knew their own terrain better than our guys did -- they used demoralization techniques and fear in the form of these genius booby traps that made soldiers literally fear every step they took on patrol or otherwise. They also realized that public support for the war at home was not very high to begin with, and dwindling every day especially with every fresh new body sent back to America. But really it's that simple to win a war, sometimes you don't have to "win" the war.
