I think it's more of a cultural phenomenon at this point than anything else. People have lived with a lack of socialization, or with poor socialization or positive relationships, forever. They've even lived under those same conditions with an over-abundance of guns within society as well for longer than we've had this problem as well, so it's hardly something to do with the number of guns (although that certainly doesn't help). The thing I think that fuels all of it is the media. A lot of people think Columbine was the first school shooting; it wasn't. It certainly seemed to get the ball rolling though. The news though really sensationalized this as a phenomenon, even if accidentally, and it has become more and more of a common thing since then. I think a lot of these mass shooters on a conscious or subconscious level are just seeking attention. Sure, they're probably depressed and they're absolutely insane, but think about it -- more people are likely to remember the name of the shooter than any of their victims. The victims don't get a Wikipedia page devoted entirely to them, but the shooters do. This is one reason I am all in favor of not naming the shooter or showing their face on the news, and ideally giving as little coverage to them as possible so it at least takes the fame/infamy factor out of it. Of course, the news secretly loves it when these things happen because as the old saying goes, "If it bleeds, it leads". Violence is good for business for them.

@nate9198 Sadly it's too late for America. Even if they banned guns today, they're not getting them all back. There's something like three guns for each person in America, and there's a lot of people who don't even own guns meaning some people have like 10+ and are skewing the numbers literally by themselves. At this point I feel like "mass shooting" is just a new suicide method. A good number of them kill themselves, the cowards they are, at the end. The only ones who don't do so are the radicalized ones who do it not because they're miserable, but because they've become radicalized and are doing it for "a cause". The manifesto writers, the ones doing it for political reasons or terroristic reasons. Then there's a good portion of them who were probably just going to kill themselves but would rather go out in a bang instead. In any case though, I have to imagine the ones who do end up dead by the end are hoping there is television and the news in Hell so they can see what a mess they made one way or another once all is said and done.

@LordVader1094 And that's the thing like honestly I think "mass shooting" is the new suicide method. People who were already gonna pop themselves are selfishly like "how many can I take with me?" and not only that they know it's going to be on the news. THEY get the fame, even if for a short while. THEY get remembered forever though via Wikipedia and history books, and the victims get a gravestone.
