I've seen this video like 5 times now. I love it. The only thing that aggravates me is the part where they're voting in the guild hall trying to demonstrate his "problem solving" abilities. He asks a question about undead and a necrotic haze, then they do this wonky edit where the guy chimes in "all those in favor raise your hand". All those in favor to a necrotic haze? I wanna know what he really achieved in that situation. Also, unrelated but interesting all the same. I actually went to High School with the trans kid, Devin. He was trans back then, too. If you ask I may tell you which HS, but barring that it was a major public High School in Southern New Jersey. He's moved more to the center of the state if he's living in or even near Tom's River now.

I went to high school with Devin. We weren't really friends, but everyone knew who the trans kid was. I knew people who talked to her though and by those accounts she was supposedly really nice.

Good for you Dayge, you have a comfort in yourself that many adults haven't even developed. Don't ever let anyone make you feel like the things you enjoy are not worth pursuing, for any reason whatsoever.

Olivia Good Oh, right. She. lol SHE was known as the trans kid when I was in school, though. Nobody was just outright mean to HER or anything, as far as I know, but then again I never really became good friends with her or anything, I just know I had lunch with her in Freshman year and beyond that I just saw her around campus.

It's notoriously mispronounced, the "P" sounds more like a "B". South Park actually made an episode about this very phenomenon, IIRC the episode itself was called Ass Burgers.

Did you play Mystic Realms? I looked it up and the only fee I could find (in the short amount of time I looked to begin with) was like $5 a year. Per character. Just to store it on their database or whatever online.

If you are going to be practicing for real-life combat, the closer to real-life weapons the better. I don't LARP, I don't know the terminology, I am aware some programs allow you to use different kinds of weapons that are actually more realistic (but they are also more dangerous I hear, too). I would probably prefer to play with those kinds of weapons, I am probably wrong about this but I want to say they're made of fiberglass? I am not sure. The most badass form of play fighting I've ever seen is Armored Combat League. It's an International thing, I am guessing it's much more dangerous but even just watching videos is good enough for me. Closest thing to actual medieval combat :P

there's a website, they do have a small fee I saw. If I lived within an hour of this place (if I still lived in NJ) I would literally consider signing up for it myself. Best happy medium -- tabletop RPGs. Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, etc.

He'll be especially godlike if they're weak against the same material they make pool toys with. The weapons (to a fault) are nothing like swords. Can't have people getting injured and all.

It'll be OK Alex. Anyway, only one I remember was Ass Burgers, but I've seen pretty much every episode of South Park at least twice, so ... refresh my memory about the 2nd one, assuming that's what you meant in the first place.

It's less to do with the weight (although it does weigh enough less that that is also something that should be considered) and more to do with the fact that you're practicing with something that is bulkier and wouldn't feel the same as a sword. There are lots of differences besides just the weight, but from a practical combat standpoint LARPing absolutely would not prepare you for real combat, particularly combat with a mock medieval weapon in what we have defined the parameters as taking place in a post-apocalyptic but otherwise modern day world.

This kid's family are great. They make all the difference in the world, more than anything else in his life, especially schools and the culture they inherently embody. Because he was not only allowed to, but encouraged and accepted to, participate in this activity, very well actually literally may have saved his life. Not saying all people with Asperger's or Autism are similar or characteristically capable of doing such terrible things, but that kid who did the Newtown situation had Asperger's as well. The difference being that instead of his Mom and Dad getting divorced and then giving him guns to play with, this kid's parents allowed him to use oversized soft-noodles to fight with and the confidence to actually get out there and socialize with people who share his interests. I don't care what anybody says, being a loner isn't healthy, even for people who particularly enjoy their quiet time. Privacy is one thing, completely isolating one's self is bad.

The guy that started Mystic Realms (Anthony Kukal, aka Anton Kukal I found out) is actually a lawyer apparently. On top of being the director for this program and all. Pretty cool.

+Rolling Buckler lol... the thing that aggravated me the most about that was that it's a blatant ripoff of Hodor. I mean, I guess it adds some flavor to their story that he's there... but a ripoff of a character he is, all the same.

vertigo0331 I am not a betting man, but I'd bet money that's not his girlfriend. It may be his sister or something, but I will say this, if a girl is going to be willing to date a guy who does an activity like this, it's almost certainly going to be a girl who does things like that for fun herself.

OH well actually you are right about that. I guess that was a two part series (Ass Burgers being the second of the two). It's where Randy and Sharon, Stan's parents, get divorced as well. And Stan is all depressed because everything seems like shit to him, literally. The episode before that is "You're Getting Old" I guess that technically makes it and Ass Burgers a two part series.

The dad just kinda keeps his head hung low, sorta glancing slightly every which way. Almost as if he had farted, and while she was just yapping her mouth off about tangents and being accepted, blah blah blah, he's like... "does she ... does she smell it? glances towards camera-men ... they definitely smell it... oh Lord... oh, look alive, they're looking at you!" nods bashfully, then returns into his reclusive fear "they definitely smell it, they just don't want to say anything because it would be awkward" After seeing this a few times, in all seriousness, it's funny, he doesn't say a single word. Not one. And it's hard to tell what his emotional state is, it's almost like ... well we know where the gene came from when it came to Jon's birth. He seems a little out there himself.

HOLY SHIT! I just realized I went to High School with the transgender kid, Devin. That's so wild. He's a bit further away now though apparently, as Tom's River was like an hour away from where I lived. That's so crazy, glad to see he's doing well.

My thing though is it kind of is a game, isn't it? He says it's not, or an interactive drama, if you can die and whatnot it's a game.

I went to HS with the trans chick. They were cool lol I mean we never hung out but I always silently respected them for being who they were and being confident in it, something I didn't have as a kid in high school anyway.

@robmckay875 Correct, it's to such an extent I would say mild asperger's could even be a gift. You can still learn how to improve your life within the scope of that disability, but you're still asperger's smart. But if you have it worse than others, it's still a gift but the debilitating effects of it start to make it worse than it is good. I think the kid featured in this has a moderate to heavy case, but it's not severe, it's close, but even he has found a way in LARPing to learn what other people may think is common sense.
