  1. Game of Thrones Season 1 wolves "looked like shit" according to Joe Rogan. They were young direwolves, over time they had to use CGI wolves because there's no such thing as a real direwolf and they're too large but for Season 1 they used real wolves because for all intents and purposes they would've been that small back then. The funniest thing to me though is that Joe Rogan thinks REAL wolves "looked like shit", and later on in the show they looked better? lol I don't think anyone's ever said that

  2.  @stephaniefitzsimon1021  Yes. And yes. But for all intents and purposes the direwolves we got to know for the rest of the duration of the show were NOT CGI in the first episode. Part of is due to budgetary constraints, like you said, but the other aspect of that is they were literally puppies at the time. As they grew, so to did the CGI budget. If there was a CGI wolf in episode 1, it was almost certainly the adult mother that had been killed by a stag (which actually has metaphorical substance in the context of the show as well, considering the Direwolf is the sigil of House Stark whereas the Stag is the sigil of House Baratheon (what Joffrey and the rest of the Lannister kids technically belonged to, as they were assumed to be Baratheons by most of the world except for those who knew the full truth). At any rate Joe Rogan doesn't understand that the wolves in Season 1 are not MEANT to look like they do at the end of the show, it's less to do with their budget increasing though than it is they were babies in episode 1 and by the time it ended they're like twice the size of their mother, and probably twice or even three times as old as well.
