@FriedrichHerschel The only way that is true is if the Europeans were both willing to increase spending and spend that money massively on American weapons. Anyone honest knows that wasn't going to happen. Everyone knows that Europe was happy not spending money on their militaries and only increased spending when they felt the US wouldn't protect them. Either the Europeans were going to refuse to increase spending and continue riding on America's coat tails, or they were going to increase spending and focus on domestic production. It's a nice catch 22 that complete eliminates the leverage you think you have.

Not much. The Europeans have been scared and hiding behind the US for years. It's why the Germans insisted that the US send Abrams to Ukraine before they would allow anyone to send their old mothballs leopards.
