Exactly as happens today in capitalist EUrope, the reason is super-mega greedy profit by the intermediary mega-corps (or even intermediary cooperatives, namely Eroski), not even to keep food prices low (they are very high and the mega-corps brag about that and how they make shameful profits at the expense of both farmers and consumers).

@Pidalin - Using €uro si bad, not using it worse? Not sure of the details in Czechia, haven't traveled in decades, but I'm quite sure of the main reason why everything is getting more expensive here in Europe and cheaper in Asia: USA and their endless wars. What has happened in the last years (the pandemic totalitarian drill, the "war" with Russia and previous support for terrorist fascism in Ukraine, now the support for the genocidal regime of Israel and the self-sabotage of the Suez Canal trade route as result, etc. are all destroying Europe and turning it into a fully fledged colony of North America.

@iwwy1 - I do shop at a local farmers' market... sometimes: quality/price balance is not very good and many go with the low fat + high sugar recipes that are exactly the opposite to what my paleodiet strategy and my diabetes demand. Worse: my favorite cheese is half of the time in bad condition and the only worker caring about that problem was scolded by her boss for returning cheese in bad state, go figure! Anyway, once again the reformists (you in this case) get the idea completely wrong but aiming at the commoner and ignoring the real problem: industry and commerce. Even in the best of scenarios you can't lead the consumers to "do the right thing" for years and decades when people can see that the corporations don't do almost anything at all, that they actually lie about what they are suppossed to do by law even, like recycling or abiding by other environmental or labor laws. Even the most committed citizen will falter before the obviousness of the scam and the insult of blaming them instead of the Capitalist Regime of what is happening. We proletarians have very small ecological footprint, the problem is (mostly) elsewhere, that elsewhere you are protecting.

@iwwy1 - No, I'm from the Basque Country, Europe. Anyway, I'm thinking that what you call a "farmer market" may be what I call just "a market", whose sources are varied (collection of shops like fishmongers, butchers, fruit and veggie shops, cheese shops, etc.) and what I was referring to was to a particular shop that sells actual farmer produce. I don't know what exactly you meant by "farmer market", maybe those Sunday morning markets at the park? In any case the possibilities do exist but none guarantees any sort of eco or grass-fed quality, for example.
